Reaching the Least-Reached Island

In a country composed of many islands, some servants of the Lord are faithfully striving to reach the people of the “least-reached” island with the good news of Jesus Christ. One field worker recently traveled to this island to visit a tribe in a village. After first flying to the region, the worker had to go six hours by motorcycle, and he had to cross rivers. You may be wondering how he could cross a river with a motorcycle – both he and the motorcycle had to travel on a bamboo raft! As if that was not challenging enough, he reached a place where the road was too muddy for motorcycles, and, accompanied by a local pastor, he then had to walk four hours. The worker and the local pastor arrived at the village destination, in a mountain region, around 2:00 in the morning.

The local pastor is from this mountain. He graduated from a Bible school and has been trying to reach his own people with the gospel for five years. In this area, there are around 9,000 people who are mostly nomadic, although some have settled in the village. Most of them either practice no religion or practice ancestral worship. But this pastor has now planted a small church with about 40 members!

In one village, a pastor has utilized practical means to gain acceptance. Available water used to be brown and muddy. Using reverse osmosis, the pastor has successfully changed the water so that it is drinkable. Although his church does sell some of the water, the pastor gave it freely to a boarding school that is under the auspices of another major world religion. Because of the provision of this clean drinking water, the pastor was granted approval to have a church built in that administrative division. Let’s pray that the people in this region receive an even greater gift than clean drinking water – let’s pray that they receive the living water that Jesus gives to those who ask Him!

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. (John 4:13-14, NIV)
